The idea for Western Medical Services first took shape during a long night shift working on a frontline 999 ambulance. Between calls, I found myself thinking about the kind of ambulance service I would want to build: one that delivered excellent care, created opportunities and genuinely invested in its people.
We started small in 2023. Western initially operated from my garage. Today, our headquarters and ambulance station show just how far the organisation has come.
From those beginnings, we have grown into an organisation of more than 150 team members, supported by a substantial fleet of vehicles and delivering an expanding range of services across the communities we serve.
Our progress has never simply been about buildings, vehicles or numbers. We invested our time in our people, and they are the reason for our success. Their professionalism, ideas, commitment and belief in what WMS could become have shaped the organisation we are today.

Independent-contractor opportunities
Our contractor register remains open for appropriately qualified professionals.
What is an independent contractor?
An independent contractor is a self-employed professional who may provide services to WMS on individual assignments. They are not a WMS employee and joining the register does not guarantee work, regular shifts or a minimum level of engagement.
WMS uses an approved contractor register so we can draw on appropriately qualified professionals when services require additional clinical or operational capacity, while maintaining safe, regulated patient care.
How the arrangement works
- You decide whether to accept an assignment offered to you; WMS is not obliged to offer work and you are not obliged to accept it.
- Once you accept an assignment, you are expected to attend and deliver it safely, professionally and within your competence.
- You invoice WMS for completed services and remain responsible for your own tax and National Insurance arrangements.
- You must keep your qualifications, DBS, registration and required compliance evidence current.
- While working on WMS assignments, you follow the clinical-governance, safeguarding, safety, confidentiality and regulatory standards needed to protect patients and the public.
